Samsung Galaxy M30 has a good display and brings triple camera glory at a budget, but there are challenges

Samsung has finally decided to change its strategies for the budget smartphone segment in India, and as a result, the company has launched its new Galaxy M-series in India where the ‘M’ seems to stand for millennials. The Samsung Galaxy M30 is the most recent addition to this series which brings the triple rear cameras in a more competitive as well as affordable segment.

The Samsung Galaxy M30 has been priced in direct competition to the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro and Realme 3 Pro in India, and the device is based on the same idea of offering some premium feature to budget buyers. The Samsung Galaxy M30 comes with a Full HD+ AMOLED display with tall aspect ratio, a massive battery backup, triple rear cameras and more.

The Samsung Galaxy is the third smartphone in the new Samsung Galaxy M30 series and sits right between the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy A30. Since Samsung has launched a plethora of new budget offerings in India in the recent past, it seems that the brand has finally realised the importance of the latest trend where buyers ask for everything at an affordable price tags.

Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi, Realme, and Honor have been able to deliver on the same, but the question remains, whether the Samsung Galaxy M30 will be able to hold its ground against the competition. Let’s find out.

Samsung’s One UI needs some improvements

What’s good about the Samsung Galaxy M30

There is a lot to say about the Samsung Galaxy M30 when it comes to what we loved about this particular device. For starters, the smartphone follows a similar design theme as that of the new Galaxy M phones, and that is a good thing in every sense. This means that despite its size and the huge battery inside, the Samsung Galaxy M30 still feels light and easy to use with a single hand. However, the polycarbonate back is prone to get scratches very easily which can hamper the overall look of the glossy finish.

We thought that with such a tall aspect ratio and a big screen, the Samsung Galaxy M30 wouldn’t be as easy to handle. However, the curved edges and easily accessible volume rockers and power button make it a comfortable device to hold with just one hand. Moreover, the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is perfectly placed at the back even for those with small fingers. The Samsung Galaxy M30 was launched in Gradation Blue and Gradation Black colour options, and we had the former version as our review unit.

Lately, budget smartphone makers have started offering dedicated microSD card slots for storage expansion, and the Samsung Galaxy M30 is no exception as it comes with a dual SIM tray also having a dedicated microSD card slot. As we mentioned, the rear of the device is prone to scratches, and we could notice a ton of them while reviewing the device.

Giving attention to details, Samsung has rightfully given a little bump on the camera housing to provide it with a more premium like feel. This small bump is not even noticeable with naked eyes which is a subtle touch to the overall design.

At the front, you have the 6.4-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio which is undoubtedly the best display panel in the segment. It offers an ample amount of colour saturation for high-quality content while the display also provides sharp contrast as well as a good amount of brightness level even under direct sunlight. The panel also has good viewing angles while the waterdrop notch ensures that you get a lot of real estate for gaming, watching videos and multitasking.

The smartphone also offers options such as Adaptive Display, AMOLED Photo, AMOLED Cinema and Basic to set the resolution according to your needs. All this means that the Samsung Galaxy M30, which also supports HD video streaming, can act as your perfect on-the-go device for multimedia consumption.

The fact that the Samsung Galaxy M30 comes with a massive 5000mAh battery makes the deal even sweeter since you can use the device extensively for the whole day and still expect around 20 per cent charge by the time you go to sleep. Moreover, the adaptive fast charger takes a little under two hours to fully charge the battery.

Coming to the performance of the Samsung Galaxy M30, it can handle all day-to-day tasks without any fuss, and even though we used the 4GB RAM version of the smartphone, it still managed to handle multitasking very well. From switching between apps to app reload time, everything seemed at par with the smartphone. Moreover, the octa-core Exynos 7904 14nm processor, which comes coupled with Mali-G71 GPU, can handle light games with easy while it struggles a bit during extended PUBG Mobile sessions or a couple of hours of playing Asphalt 9: Legends.

Now, it’s time to talk about the biggest highlight of the Samsung Galaxy M30 which is the cameras. The Galaxy M30 is probably the cheapest smartphone to offer a triple rear camera module which consists of a 13-megapixel primary rear camera with f/1.9 aperture, LED flash, 5-megapixel secondary camera sensor with f/2.2 aperture and another 5-megapixel 123-degree ultra-wide angle camera.

At the front, there is a 16-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture. Just like the other new Galaxy M series smartphones, the camera app of Samsung Galaxy M30 is also simple and easy to use. All the significant modes and options can be accessed with the two-tap function while you get modes such as Panorama, Pro, Live Focus, Stickers, Beauty, and Continuous Shot modes.

Pictures taken from the Samsung Galaxy M30’s rear camera are on par with the competition as you get ample amount of colour saturation and details. However, when we say that this one of the cheapest smartphones with the triple rear camera setup, it also means that you should not expect a lot in terms of picture quality. Under low lighting, the pictures come out a little grainy while under good exposure. Images come out sharp with good details though don’t expect a lot of clarity.

On the other hand, macro shots came out well, and we were surprised by the amount of sharpness the camera had to offer. However, as soon as your hands shake a little, there is an unwanted blur in the picture since there is no OIS. That said, the overall quality of the photographs were on par with other smartphones in the price segment. The most significant advantage of the triple rear camera setup is the wide angle sensor which lets you squeeze a lot in a single frame, but it does compromise a little on the overall details of the picture.

The front 16-megapixel camera also did well with the details and selfies came up rather good with no sort of noise of grains under outdoor conditions. The Live Focus mode also worked well as the bokeh effect managed to offer proper edge detection.

What’s not so good about the Samsung Galaxy M30

The dual tone design does feel somewhat premium, thanks to the glossy finish but you will need to buy a protective case to maintain this look as the Samsung Galaxy M30 doesn’t ship with a casing as part of the box contents. The lock screen stories feature can be irritating and will eat up a substantial amount of cellular data and battery life. If you are not a fan of getting sponsored content, news stories and more, it is recommended that you should not enable this setting when you set up your device.

Samsung Galaxy M30 performance

The Samsung Galaxy M30 is not made for massive gamers, and this is one department where the smartphone lacks behind the competition as the device feels a lot laggy when playing heavy-graphics games such as PUBG Mobile. The device selected medium graphics by default and while there were no major frame drops, the Samsung Galaxy M30 felt overburdened with notifications during gameplay. Moreover, the back of the device heated up a little during extended gaming sessions.

Samsung’s One UI still needs some improvements, and while it offers a great lot of essential as well as functional features, the seems heavily customised and the device hangs up for a second when you receive a lot of notifications at once.

Samsung Galaxy M30: Should you buy it?

Samsung Galaxy M30

The Samsung Galaxy M30 is probably one of the best all-rounder launched by the company recently and the fact that it brings the fun of AMOLED display and the glory of triple rear cameras, makes it a worthy competitor to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro and the Realme 3 Pro. Moreover, you can easily get more than a day’s worth of juice out of the battery which makes Samsung Galaxy M30 an excellent smartphone for multimedia consumption. That said, it does lack in the performance department, but you get a segment-leading display to cover that up.

As for the pricing, the Samsung Galaxy M30 price in India starts at Rs. 14,990 for the 4GB RAM / 64GB storage version while the 6GB RAM / 128GB storage version of the smartphone costs Rs. 17,990. At this price point, the Samsung Galaxy M30 is a suitable device for the millennials.
